PBS has announced that it will broadcast the Australian production of "Driving Miss Daisy" starring Tony Award winners Angela Lansbury and James Earl Jones on July 17, 2015. The filmed production will be a part of the "Great Performances" series. Captured live on stage during its 2013 Australian tour, this Alfred Uhry Pulitzer-Prize winning play was performed both on Broadway and in London with Vanessa Redgrave in the title role before Lansbury took over. Lansbury and Jones are joined on stage by Tony winner Boyd Gaines in the role of Boolie Werthan, Daisy's son. For exact broadcast times, check your local listings.
"Uhry’s classic play is a timeless, searing, funny, and ultimately hopeful meditation on race relations in America, told through the complex relationship between two of popular culture’s most enduring characters. When Daisy Werthan, a widowed, 72-year-old Jewish woman living in midcentury Atlanta, is deemed too old to drive, her son hires Hoke Colburn, an African American man, to serve as her chauffeur. What begins as a troubled and hostile pairing, soon blossoms into a profound, life-altering friendship that transcends all the societal boundaries placed between them."
